KUALA LUMPUR: Integrated education hub EduCity Iskandar Malaysia Sdn Bhd (EduCity) is expected to save RM2.22 million on its electricity bill over a period of 25 years with the installation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system following an agreement on Sustainable Renewable Energy (SARE).

The tripartite agreement was signed by EduCity, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and its unit, GSPARX Sdn Bhd.

The initiative was led by Digital Pulse, a unit under Iskandar Innovations Sdn Bhd (IISB), on behalf of Iskandar Education Enterprise Sdn Bhd (IEESB), the operating entity under EduCity.

IEESB director Wan Ahmad Saifuddin Wan Ahmad Radzi said the smart partnership, which was expected to be ready for implementation by Feb next year.

He said it was an extraordinary opportunity to promote a cleaner environment and boost economic productivity.

He said, in the first year of the agreement, EduCity expected to save an estimated RM31,354.

The 121.41ha fully-integrated education hub in Iskandar Malaysia hosts top education institutions and universities from around the world with top-notch facilities for students.

TNB chief ventures officer Datuk Nor Azman Mufti said two locations had been identified to house the PV — the Multi Varsity Complex and a stretch of walkway, which could generate 152kWp and 130kWp respectively for a total of 282kWp in electricity generation.

“Annually these two locations will generate 344,816kWh/per annum,” he said.

Under the SARE scheme, EduCity can sell excess solar energy from the PV installation to TNB and obtain energy credits on a one-on-one offset basis to further offset its electricity bills via a net energy metering scheme.

“In line with government aspirations to raise Malaysia’s renewable energy targets and sustainable development, TNB is committed to developing green energy business while meeting the needs of the future in a sustainable, reliable and affordable manner,” said Nor Azman.

TNB Renewables Sdn Bhd for GSPARX managing director Mohd Yusrizal Mohd Yusof said, to date, the company had secured 60 renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 6,000 kWp.

“At the moment, we have completed six projects and hope that by year-end, we will able to complete at least half of the projects from the total of 60,” he said. - Bernama
