KUALA LUMPUR, - Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) through Gsparx Sdn Bhd sealed a Supply Agreement for Renewable Energy (SARE) with Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd (Mydin Holdings) last week to instal solar photovoltaic (PV) on the rooftop of Mydin Mall Manjoi in Ipoh, Perak.

The 324kWp solar rooftop PV is expected to generate up to RM3.24 million in electricity bill savings within the project’s 25-year duration.

Mydin Holdings hoped the agreement could spark similar venture between both parties, going forward.

Mydin Holdings MD Datuk Wira Dr Ameer Ali Mydin said this is a small step that may pave the way towards similar collaboration in seven of the company’s hypermarkets.

He added that Mydin Holdings’ focus is not solely on generating profit, as it also places importance on humanity and environment, as outlined by the concept of triple bottom line (people, planet and profit).

“The Mydin-TNB collaboration is a contribution to energy sustainability for the good of the organisation, community and country.

“This is our commitment for the future generation,” he said at the signing ceremony that took place at Mydin Holdings in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

The SARE was sealed between Gsparx, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of TNB Renewables Sdn bhd, and Mydin Holdings.

This made Mydin Holdings the first chain retailer in Malaysia which has heeded the government’s call for green energy.

The agreement was signed by TNB chief ventures officer and Gsparx director Datuk Nor Azman Mufti, TNB chief retail officer Ir Megat Jalaludin Megat Hassan and Mydin Holdings ED Datuk Murad Ali Mydin.

Megat Jalaludin said the collaboration will generate green energy supply for Mydin Holdings.

This contribution is in line with the government’s aspiration to reach 20% renewable energy (RE) generation by 2025.

“This collaboration is a win-win arrangement for Gsparx, being a registered solar PV investor; TNB Retail Sdn Bhd which offers services to state and federal government buildings, commercial, and industrial customers; and Mydin Holdings as a customer.

“The solar installation will enable Mydin Holdings to use electricity generated at a lower tariff and help towards carbon footprint reduction,” Megat Jalaludin said.

The agreement, which also covers net energy metering scheme, will allow Mydin Holdings to transfer the surplus of energy generated to TNB, at the same rate of electricity charges.

TNB aspires to generate 1,700MW RE by 2025
